CPR to Waldo
The Canadian Pacific also built a short branch line southwards from the Crowsnest Pass Route to service sawmills in the Kootenay River low lands. The railway left the Crowsnest line at a junction called Caithness (a few km west of Elko) and extended 10 miles (16 km). This branch line was abandoned in 1928. There were also several logging railroads in this region. The Ross-Saskatoon Lumber Company operated a logging line on the eastern side of the Kootenay River south of Waldo.
