26.1 The South-West station gardens

26.1 The South-West station gardens circa 1909. The gardens seemed to have been started by 1905 to the south-west of the station, but within several years the tress were becoming taller as this photo shows. The Railway – YMCA is not yet built dating the photo before 1910. The railway began the practice of planting gardens at their major stations as a way of impressing its passengers arriving at locations. It was also a way of promoting the increasing sophistication of communities. CBK.2000.017.002
