Diesel Locomotives on the Crow (2 of 5)

Diesel 5In the early 1970s, the Fairbanks-Morse diesels were replaced by General Motors diesels, which, although often of the same age, had proven to be more reliable. As well, new more powerful and efficient diesels were assigned to the Crowsnest trains. These came with the redevelopment of coal mining Coal Revival and the introduction of unit trains. These were 3000-hp locomotives built by Montreal Locomotive Works. Some of these, to be used as "slave" units in the middle of the trains, were equipped to be operated by radio control from the front engine. Within a few years, however, the Montreal Locomotive Works diesels were reassigned to eastern Canada and General Motors diesels took over most duties.
