Diesel Locomotives on the Crow (3 of 5)
The locomotive type that dominated Crowsnest coal and general freight traffic from the
1970s through the mid-1990s has been the General Motors' "SD40-2" This is a 3000-hp
diesel that rides on three-axle trucks. The SD40-2s have proven to be very reliable,
serviceable and versatile locomotives and Canadian Pacific operates over 500 of them.
Smaller, but similar, locomotives in the 2,000-hp range, riding on four-axle trucks, are
also used in freight service on branch lines and in yards. These locomotives are called
GP35s, GP38s and GP38-2s.
